We’ve had the pleasure of welcoming Eloise, a 20-year-old Zoology student from the University of Bristol as a volunteer at our Hatchery. With a passion for conservation and a love for marine life, Eloise has been a fantastic addition to our team.
From helping to care for our baby lobsters to assisting with shore releases, she’s embraced every opportunity to dive into the fascinating world of lobsters.
We sat down with Eloise to chat about her time at the Hatchery…
Why did you choose to volunteer at The National Lobster Hatchery?
“I’ve spent a lot of time in Cornwall and knew of The National Lobster Hatchery’s work. I thought it would be a fun place to volunteer, so I got in touch. I spoke to Chris (Hatchery Technician and Education Officer) about it and the rest is history!”
Which creature is your favourite at the Hatchery?
“I love the Blennies (Blenniiformes fish), with their grumpy little faces!”
What’s your favourite track to work along to in the Hatchery?
“Anything that will get Ben (Head of Production) dancing! Probably something by the 1975.”
What’s the best biscuit to go with a cuppa in the office?
“Chocolate digestive!”
What lobster fact are you going to be sharing with your family and friends?
“That they eat each other if given the chance! And that it’s good for the larvae and adult lobsters to eat their own moult!”
Where are you going next?
“I’ll be heading off to Kefalonia, Greece, for the summer to do sea turtle conservation. Then I’ll be back to university to finish my degree.”
What would you say to those thinking of volunteering with the Hatchery?
“Do it! You’ll never look at lobsters in the same way again. Lobsters are just so cool and not enough people know it, apart from the odd bunch that works here.”
Eliose’s dedication and passion for marine life have made her a joy to have around. We wish her all the best and hope she carries the knowledge and experiences from the NLH with her.
